About Doc

Dr Harry Hoehn, born July 8th 1930, spent most of his childhood across the street from the Allenhurst Beach Club in New Jersey. As he grew up, his love for the outdoors, sports and education also started to grow, and never really stopped.

Doc earned his PHD in Columbia University, writing his dissertation on Scuba and Human Nitrogen Absorption and started teaching physical education at Queens College along with an incredibly successful scuba diving program for over 60 years (until he was 89 years old). He instructed the N.Y. Police, Fire, and the F.B.I. before they started their own individual scuba programs, so he was a pioneer in his field!

Doc also developed programs for Outdoor Wilderness Experience, Women’s Self Defense, Tennis, Fencing, and Skiing. Through his programs he taught thousands or students, unintentionally creating life long experiences, friendships, marriages and families.

Our last camping trip with Doc was August 26th 2020 to Bear Spring Mountain Campground, where at 90 years old, he joined us for a stroll, told a few campfire stories and took the canoe out for a spin on the lake. Doc passed away October 20th, 2020, with his lifelong best friend, by his side.

Throughout his decades of teaching, he inspired countless students to keep exploring and to seek out adventure, no matter if it’s the same campsite over and over again or a brand new place that you can’t even imagine getting to.

Our goal here at Doc’s Epic Adventures is to keep doing what Doc would have wanted us to do, explore, teach others to adventure off on their own and to create lifelong memories and relationships.

We hope you’d be proud of us Doc. Thank you for all that you’ve done for us.
